Coronavirus live updates Aug. 4: Eight more deaths in Horry, Myrtle Beach area
Public health officials confirmed 59 new coronavirus cases and 8 additional deaths Tuesday in Horry County, according to the latest figures from the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control.
This brings the county’s total to 8,206 since mid-March, along with 128 total deaths.
The latest deaths, which occurred Saturday and Sunday included six people ages 65 or older, one person 35-64 and another 18-34, according to DHEC.
The department’s Tuesday news release only listed 43 new cases in Horry, but their map showed a jump of 59 cases since Monday’s update, and DHEC officials have said the map is more accurate.

In Georgetown County, there have been 1,318 confirmed cases and 18 deaths.
Across South Carolina, cases reached 93,604 and there were 52 new deaths to raise the total to 1,774 because of COVID-19, DHEC reports.
A total of 6,389 tests were reported to DHEC Monday, and 18.3 percent of those were positive.
The department shows more than 77 percent of intensive care unit beds are currently occupied with 1,458 COVID-19 patients hospitalized and 254 of those patients on ventilators.

DHEC asks people to wear a mask when visiting public places and practice social distancing to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. It is now mandatory to wear face masks in certain public areas in unincorporated Horry County, the City of Myrtle Beach, the City of North Myrtle Beach and Georgetown County.
Health officials say washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds can help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
