Coronavirus live updates July 30: Horry County reports 80 more cases

Cases of the coronavirus jumped by 80 in the Myrtle Beach area Thursday, bringing the total number of positive tests to 7,857 across Horry County since March, health officials announced.

The county reported one death Thursday, meaning 119 people have died from the virus since the first reported death in the area March 24. The death toll from the virus is rising in the area, with 16 reported so far this week and 20 last week.

A news release from DHEC indicates 56 new cases, but the agency’s online map shows 80 new cases. Health officials have said the map provides the most accurate numbers.

Georgetown County tallies 1,210 cases and 16 deaths from the virus since the pandemic began in March.

Cases rose to 87,117 across South Carolina, and COVID-19 deaths have reached 1,600.

There is currently a 90% recovery rate from COVID-19, DHEC reports.

DHEC asks people to wear a mask when visiting public places and practice social distancing to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. It is now mandatory to wear face masks in certain public areas in unincorporated Horry County, the City of Myrtle Beach, the City of North Myrtle Beach and Georgetown County.

Health officials say washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds can help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
