Slight uptick in weekly Horry County COVID-19 cases after 2-week decline

After two consecutive weeks of declining new coronavirus cases in Horry County, the area saw a slight rebound last week, according to state health data.

A Sun News review of COVID-19 cases by zip codes in Horry County, reported daily by the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control, shows 875 new cases confirmed July 21-27, almost 100 more than the previous week.

The previous two weeks had shown a decline after a peak of 1,566 new cases June 23-29, DHEC data shows.

Accounting for population size, the 29569 zip code, which encompasses the Loris area, saw the largest jump last week with an increase of 69 cases, representing about 433 cases per 100,000 residents. That’s the largest weekly increase the Loris area has seen since DHEC began tracking COVID-19 cases in mid-March.

The 29577 and 29572 zip codes, representing areas of Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach, also had increases of more than 400 cases per 100,000 residents last week, according to DHEC data, though both have previously had larger weekly increases.
