Coronavirus live updates July 12: Horry County daily total tops 200 for 2nd straight day
Coronavirus cases continued to skyrocket in the Myrtle Beach area Sunday, according to the latest figures from the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control.
Horry County had 208 new cases as of Sunday, bringing the county’s total to 5,791 since mid-March. Horry County’s death total rose by one with the total now at 73. The person who died was elderly, according to DHEC.
In Georgetown County, there have been 791 confirmed cases and seven deaths.

DHEC has announced 1,311 coronavirus cases in Horry County so far this week.
South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster issued a “last call” order in a news conference Friday morning that prohibits restaurants and bars from selling alcoholic beverages after 11 p.m. The order begins Saturday.
Cases of the virus across the state have surpassed 56,000, DHEC reports. The state had 1,947 new cases and 10 new deaths as of Saturday, raising the totals to 56,485 and 950, respectively.
DHEC announced the state had its first two cases of Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children in connection to the virus. Health officials describe MIS-C as “a rare health condition recently recognized to occur in some children and teenagers who have contracted COVID-19 or been in contact with someone infected with the virus.”
One child is from the Midlands and the other is from the Pee Dee, and both are younger than 10.
South Carolina saw its first child death from coronavirus Saturday, DHEC stated. The death was a 5-year-old from the Midlands. DHEC is not reporting the child’s name.
DHEC reports that there has been a 436.5% rise in cases among those ages 21-30 since June 1. That age group now represents the most cases in the state at 22 percent.

DHEC asks people to wear a mask when visiting public places and practice social distancing to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. It is now mandatory to wear face masks in certain public areas in unincorporated Horry County, the City of Myrtle Beach, the City of North Myrtle Beach and Georgetown County.
Health officials say washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds can help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
