This Myrtle Beach area zip code is seeing COVID-19 cases skyrocket

Horry County as a whole continues to see high daily coronavirus case totals, but one local zip code in particular has seen cases among its residents skyrocket recently.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control reports confirmed COVID-19 cases by zip code of residence for those testing positive.

Within Horry County, the 29588 zip code — which encompasses Socastee between Burgess and Forestbrook — has had the largest total increases each of the past two weeks, including more than 300 news cases June 30-July 6, according to DHEC data.

The area has one of the largest populations among Myrtle Beach area zip codes, but even adjusted for population size, it tops the list with an increase of about 537 cases per 100,000 residents June 23-29 and 847 cases per 100,000 residents last week, a Sun News analysis shows.

The cases in 29588 began to spike in mid-June after increasing by only two per week from early May to the beginning of June. DHEC data shows 34 total COVID-19 cases there June 11, and 726 cases of of July 6.

The 29577 zip code — which encompasses a coastal portion of Myrtle Beach and Market Common area — also increased by more than 800 cases per 100,000 residents last week, with a total increase of 217 cases.

Analysis of the zip code data in previous weeks showed coastal areas in North Myrtle Beach were seeing the largest increases.
