Horry County to receive $1.5 million in federal coronavirus aid for homeless population

Horry County will receive $1.5 million in aid for its homeless population as part of an ongoing effort by the federal government to cushion the blow of the coronavirus pandemic.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson announced $2.96 billion in emergency grant funding, $23.9 million of which will go toward homeless populations in South Carolina. The move comes with Horry County, now considered a coronavirus “hot spot,” reporting more than 80 COVID-19 cases Wednesday.

The funding can be allocated to emergency shelters, hotel and motel vouchers for homeless families, essential services like childcare and education and homelessness prevention, according to a news release from HUD.

“As we continued to monitor the effects of COVID-19 in at risk communities, the Department and our partners worked quickly to respond to outbreaks and minimize the spread from hotspots to other locations,” Carson said in the release. “This increased funding to help provide for our homeless will make a difference now as we combat the coronavirus and inform long-term, innovative solutions for addressing homelessness in the future.”
