SC DHEC update: New COVID-19 death, cases confirmed in Horry County, Myrtle Beach area
State health officials confirmed an additional coronavirus-related death Thursday along with 19 new cases in Horry County.
That brings the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Myrtle Beach area to 333, though South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control officials estimate many more unconfirmed cases.
Healthcare systems statewide have been increasing testing efforts at the direction of state leaders, who warn that the increased testing will lead to higher confirmed cases totals, but the percentage of positive results should decrease.
Horry County also has 21 total coronavirus-related deaths, according to DHEC data. The latest confirmed death was an elderly person, DHEC reported, though no additional identifying information was provided.
Statewide, DHEC has confirmed 9,379 COVID-19 cases and 416 deaths.
After lengthy closures, most businesses along the Grand Strand have been allowed to reopen ahead of Memorial Day weekend. Salons, gyms and restaurants have already been allowed to reopen, and tourist attractions including aquariums and mini golf courses will be allowed to reopen Friday.
