Coronavirus live updates May 3: The latest in Myrtle Beach amid the COVID-19 pandemic

Myrtle Beach residents flocked to the beaches this weekend, enjoying the nice weather in a way that recently has been forbidden.

People are swimming, surfing, playing beach volleyball, laying out and enjoying many other activities that had been put on hold by the coronavirus.

On Monday, another privilege taken away via executive orders comes back as many restaurants will open for outdoor dining in addition to curbside service and to-go ordering.

Though there were no new COVID-19 cases reported by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control on Saturday, Horry County is indeed getting back to some sense of normalcy.

Here are the latest updates on the coronavirus in the Myrtle Beach area May 3.

The number of coronavirus cases in Horry County and the Myrtle Beach area stood firm Saturday.

The county’s total remained at 223. The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control released the latest data on Saturday afternoon.

There were no new deaths in Horry County as the total remained at 16.

Georgetown County’s total was at 43 cases, as the death toll stayed at three.

In South Carolina, there were 231 new COVID-19 cases Saturday with 11 more deaths, bringing the totals to 6,489 cases and 267 deaths.

  • The Diocese of Charleston, which leads all of South Carolina’s Catholic churches, announced Saturday that it will resume public Masses on May 11 – marking the first time they will be held since the coronavirus outbreak hit the state several weeks ago.

  • Myrtle Beach State Park and Huntington Beach State Park in Murrells Inlet were among 12 S.C. state parks that reached capacity and closed to day-use visitors at 1 p.m. Sunday, according to the South Carolina State Parks Facebook page. The others were Croft, Keowee-Toxaway, Jones Gap, Table Rock, Paris Mountain, Devils Fork, Hamilton Beach, Sadlers Creek, Hunting Island, Kings Mountain and Landsford Canal.

  • The United Way of Horry County, IMPACT - Myrtle Beach and Cafe Gelato are teaming up for another food distribution event t be held Wednesday at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. The event begins and 3 p.m. and runs until supplies run out. Those in line will be allowed one box per car and will need to have their ID with them.

Here’s your daily reminder to wash your hands. Health officials recommend washing your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Washing hands often and practicing social distancing can help prevent the spread of the virus, health officials say.
