DHEC updates, adjusts death toll: No new coronavirus cases confirmed in Myrtle Beach area

Horry County had no new confirmed coronavirus cases on Wednesday, according to the Department of Health and Environmental Control.

The total cases in the county remain at 211 since the first case was confirmed on March 15. No additional deaths in Horry County were announced on Wednesday either, but to date 15 people have died from the virus locally.

South Carolina now has had 5,881 confirmed cases and 232 deaths related to the coronavirus. That death toll reflects an adjusted increase Wednesday of 29 deaths based on an analysis of the computation process by DHEC.

DHEC cross-examined the deaths reported directly to the agency by medical professionals and the deaths reported to the agency on death certificates, and found the additional 29 fatalities. One was in Georgetown County, and none were in Horry County.

Many of the statewide cases have recovered as South Carolina currently has a 76 percent recovery rate.

On Tuesday, DHEC gave more detailed information on how the coronavirus is affecting nursing homes across the state and locally. Two local nursing homes — Brightwater Assisted Living and Myrtle Beach Manor — had one resident or staff member contract the virus respectively.
