HCS conducted a phone/email internet access survey of parents shortly after the COVID-19 closure was announced, but less than 40 percent of the nearly 104,000 surveyed responded, according to the results provided to The Sun News. Of the 37,757 responses the district received, 3,268, or 9 percent, stated they did not currently have internet services in their home.
Public schools in South Carolina have been closed since March 16, and the current order requires that closure until the end of April, though state officials have said they expect to announce a decision this week about whether or not that closure will be extended.
