Another coronavirus death confirmed in Horry County, Myrtle Beach area, cases increase

Another coronavirus death was confirmed in Horry County Thursday, while the total cases increased by five, according to the latest data released by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control.

The increase comes after no new COVID-19 cases were reported in the Myrtle Beach area Wednesday for the first time since March 17, when the first positive case was confirmed in the county. The county’s reported total actually dropped by one after a previously confirmed case was determined to be in a different county.

In addition to the 155 total cases, Horry County now has had nine deaths related to the virus, DHEC data shows. The department’s latest press release doesn’t specify an additional death in Horry County, but its data showed eight deaths prior to today.

Based on population size, the county has among the lowest rates of infection in the state with about 43 positive cases per 100,000 people.

Statewide, DHEC has confirmed a total of 3,931 COVID-19 cases and 109 associated deaths.

The worldwide pandemic has upended everyday life in South Carolina, with Gov. Henry McMaster issuing executive orders to close schools, public beach accesses and numerous nonessential businesses to reduce spread.
