The first coronavirus death in Georgetown County has been reported

The first coronavirus-related death in Georgetown County was announced Saturday by the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control.

Georgetown had one new confirmed case for a total of 17, and the death was an elderly person with additional underlying health conditions, according to DHEC, which provided its latest coronavirus update at 4 p.m. Saturday.

There were six new deaths in the state, all being elderly with additional underlying health conditions. Two deaths were residents of Lexington County, and the others were residents of Beaufort, Richland and York counties, according to DHEC.

Horry County now has 63 confirmed cases with 12 new cases reported Saturday, and has had four deaths.

Cases across South Carolina have reached 1,1917 with 217 new cases announced Saturday. There have been 40 deaths across the state because of COVID-19.

North Carolina health officials said at 11 a.m. Saturday that there are 2,402 confirmed COVID-19 cases in 88 counties of the state, up over 300 from Friday. There are 24 reported deaths and 271 cases are being hospitalized.

In Brunswick County, there are 23 cases with no deaths reported.
