Another coronavirus death reported in Horry County, Myrtle Beach area while cases rise

State health officials confirmed eight more coronavirus cases in Horry County Thursday, bringing the county total to 50, while another local death was also reported related to the virus.

Four patients in Horry County confirmed with COVID-19 have died among 31 deaths statewide. The five new deaths reported statewide Thursday were all elderly with underlying health conditions.

The number of cases in the county has more than doubled during the past six days.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control has confirmed 1,554 total cases, including an additional 261 reported Thursday. All counties have at least one confirmed case.

Horry County continues to report fewer cases than many other less populous counties across the state, though that may be partly due to delays in receiving test results.

S.C. Gov. Henry McMaster has imposed numerous restrictions, including closing schools, beach public access points and, most recently, specific nonessential businesses in an effort to reduce the spread of the virus.
