Coronavirus prevention: Horry County approves new rules allowing for remote meetings

Horry County Government will conduct public business virtually for upcoming County Council and other government meetings to prevent spreading the coronavirus.

And the public will be able to listen in or sign up to phone in their thoughts.

On Wednesday, the county announced a new protocol to handle meetings for the remainder of the pandemic. The new meeting guidelines were approved in an emergency, unannounced meeting held over the phone.

The county will announce when the first remote county council meeting will be held soon. Before that meeting an agenda and packet will be released on the county’s website 24 hours in advance to remain in accordance with state law.

Council members will all be on a conference call and the audio will be streamed publicly. The public will be allowed to phone in their comments and more information about how to participate in the meeting will be provided soon, according to a release from the county.

“Public comment is more important now than ever,” Council Member Johnny Vaught. “That’s the reason we held off so long on doing this is because we had to get the technology set up to handle the calls.”

The Horry County Planning Commission workshop meeting scheduled for Thursday will be broadcast at 3 p.m. There will be no votes taken at the workshop and no public comment, which is normal.
