Coronavirus

Will coronavirus affect the completion date of Horry County road projects?

Roads need fixing in Horry County, and at least for now, the coronavirus pandemic is not stopping work from being done.

Coronavirus is causing delays, closures and postponements across industries, but for now both Horry County and South Carolina leaders are continuing road programs.

South Carolina Department of Transportation Secretary Christy Hall said supply chains are open, crews are available and the work is able to move forward. If something happens that makes construction difficult or impossible, however, SCDOT may have to change its position.

“SCDOT intends to keep working on road and bridge construction projects until it is no longer safe or effective for us to do so,” Hall said in a statement. “We will continually reassess the situation and will adjust as needed to ensure the health and well-being of the employees in our industry.”

Hall added that like most businesses still operating, SCDOT is making sure employees are able to work while also having close access to sanitation supplies.

Horry County Spokesperson Kelly Moore said no RIDE III projects have any delays related to coronavirus.

Crews are still out working on widening Carolina Forest Boulevard and making progress on other projects. And for roads that haven’t begun construction, the county’s design and engineering employees are still at work.
