Need a haircut? More states are closing hair and nail salons in coronavirus pandemic

Will hair salons close during the coronavirus pandemic?

More and more states are shutting down these types of businesses to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Ohio and Minnesota announced closures of hair salons, nail salons and barbershops in executive orders. They follow states such as Washington, Kentucky and Nevada already putting a stop to businesses considered to be nonessential.

Illinois joined the list Friday when Gov. J.B. Pritzer announced a stay-at-home order.

More might follow.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine’s decision to shut down barbershops, beauty salons, tattoo parlors and hair and nail salons could be significant. Though behind other states in this move, DeWine has been ahead in many other responses to the coronavirus epidemic, including shutting down sports events, closing schools and shuttering bars and restaurants, The Washington Post reported.

“In a sense these were tough decisions, but in a sense they were not,” DeWine told The Washington Post. “This is life and death.”

Are haircuts safe during coronavirus?

It doesn’t appear the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued specific guidance on whether to get your haircut or nails done.

But the agency is clear about this: People should practice social distancing. That means avoiding social gatherings of more than 10 people and remaining at least 6 feet away from others.

Dr. David M. Aronoff, director of infectious diseases at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, said people shouldn’t go to hair salons or barbershops, according to TODAY.

“With COVID-19 spreading rapidly across the country I would advise postponing any hair/nail appointments,” Aronoff told TODAY. “Every person needs to do what they can to prevent the spread of infection.”

Krista Depeyrot, the co-owner of a salon in Washington, D.C., closed the business voluntarily to help stop the spread of coronavirus, Refinery 29 reported. Her advice to help your favorite stylist by staying away?

“The most helpful measure we’ve seen is from clients who have canceled or postponed appointments, but prepaid for them,” Depeyrot told Refinery 29. “Buying salon gift cards helps, too, and so does bulk-buying your salon’s products.”
