Woman cuts trip to Myrtle Beach short after motel had bed bugs, lawsuit says

A North Carolina woman alleges she woke up to bed bugs biting her at a Myrtle Beach motel, forcing her to cut her family’s vacation short.

Crenica Moore is suing Shree Laxshmi Narayan LLC, which owns Vancouver Motel on South Ocean Boulevard, for “negligence” and “recklessness,” according to a lawsuit filed March 22.

The lawsuit states Moore woke up the first night of her stay in February to find she was being attacked by bed bugs.

Moore alleges she contacted management and showed them the bloody sheets and dead bugs in her bed, but motel staff refused to provide her with another room.

She then canceled her family’s stay at the motel and made the four-hour trek back home in the middle of the night, according to the lawsuit.

The complaint states the bugs were in the motel room’s mattresses, bedding and carpet.

But Raj Patel, who owns Vancouver, said they have never had any bed bugs reported in that room.

“...If you have a problem with beg bugs, the next person is going to complain, too,” he said, adding that is not the case.

Patel said sometimes guests bring pets that attract fleas, which could also have been the problem.

Mary Allen, who manages the property, said rooms are sprayed periodically.

“And, if we have a complaint, we double spray,” she added.

The motel “knew or should have known that the rooms given to (Moore) was infested with bed bugs, that they didn’t treat the room before (she was) injured, nor did they warn them of the bug infestation,” the suit reads.

Moore alleges the injuries caused her a significant amount of pain and suffering.

She is seeking unspecified financial damages.
