The Range Rover Velar May Not Be An SUV Much Longer

Breaking Tradition

JLR appears determined to break tradition from, well, just about everything. Jaguar's reboot is still being talked about today, shifting from "Grace, Space, and Pace" to monolithic luxury EVs. The same goes for Land Rover, with the all-electric Range Rover set for its world premiere soon and an ambitious pricing strategy.

One thing is clear with the British company: it's taking bold, if rather divisive, steps to ensure long-term survival. The traditionalists won't like it, but JLR is chasing after younger customers by pinning its hopes on clean-sheet designs and platforms.

And Now, Something Completely Different

Land Rover has been a purveyor of 4x4s for nearly 80 years, long before the terms SUV and crossover were even coined. It's practically unimaginable for the brand to come up with anything else, and while it has experimented with convertibles before, one future model might just take the brand into uncharted territory.

According to Autocar, the next-generation Range Rover Velar might be transformed into a sedan. More specifically, it could be a high-riding sedan that represents a massive departure from the current model. Now, there have been rumors of a Range Rover sedan in the past, but it's becoming more of a reality.

Key Details

Based on spy shots, it won't look like a sedan in a traditional sense, but rather, more like a four-door coupe. ThinkBMW 4 Series Gran Coupe or Audi A5, and you're pretty much on the right track. And while there's a fair bit of ground clearance, it sits low for something that claims to be a Range Rover. We're genuinely curious if it'll retain some degree of off-road capability.

So far, it's looking like an electric-only affair for the next-gen Velar, although Land Rover may offer a hybrid option down the line. A two-wheel-drive option may also be offered on an entry-level model. It's said to be one of the last models led by former JLR design chief Gerry McGovern. The publication said that the vehicle is now in its final testing phases and slated to make its world premiere within the next six months.

Whatever it'll look like, it'll surely generate some polarizing opinions. The addition of a 'sedan' makes us wonder whether Land Rover is further blurring the lines between it and Jaguar. Jaguar's recovery will depend on every car it can sell, and the Range Rover Velar sedan could make that task a little more difficult. For now, though, we'll reserve judgment and wait for the final product.
