The Cars America Is Losing After The 2026 Model Year
Each year a selection of cars, trucks, SUVs, and vans are put out to pasture. Some due to poor demand, others due to a new replacement waiting in the wings, and then there are others that are facing the axe due to shifting manufacturing and regulatory priorities. So, here are the vehicles that have either already been cancelled for 2026 or will be no more once they reach the end of this model year.
BMW 8 Series
Model Years: 2019–2026
BMW ended production of its 8 Series range in April this year. The range-topping M8 was discontinued in 2025, but now all 8 Series variants including the Coupe, Gran Coupe and Convertible are no longer available to buy new. Low sales volumes are partly to blame, but it has had a relatively long production run, and with major changes taking place in the product line-up, it is uncertain whether a replacement is on the cards.
BMW iX
Model Years: 2022–2026
BMW's bold electric SUV flagship is officially wrapping up its run in the States. While it initially polarized enthusiasts with its massive grille design, the iX quickly earned respect for its impressive refinement, great range and mega straight-line performance. This marks the end of BMW's first dedicated midsize electric luxury platform, but the beginning of a new range of EVs like the iX3 and iX5.
BMW Z4
Model Years: 2019–2026
The Z4 was never a volume seller, but aside from the far cheaper Mazda Miata, this is usually the case for niche roadsters. This shrinking segment has seen the demise of several other long-term rivals to the Z4, and the Final Edition model saw off the Z4 in March of this year. The ‘Handschalter' manual edition will be especially missed.
Cadillac CT4
Model Years: 2020–2026
The subcompact luxury sedan segment has proven difficult for American brands to crack, leading Cadillac to discontinue the CT4. While the V-Series variants earned praise from road testers and enthusiasts alike, the interior materials and overall handling of entry-level models never quite challenged the class leaders. Production is said to end in June, however the good news is that the larger CT5 (which is also being discontinued) will be replaced by a new gas-powered model.
Hyundai Ioniq 6
Model Years: 2023–2026
In a surprising move for a vehicle that remains highly competitive in charging speeds and highway efficiency, Hyundai has removed the 2026 Ioniq 6 from its U.S. range. The high-performance Ioniq 6 N is still available in limited quantities, but the base model is no longer due to import tariffs and slow sales. 2025 models are still available on Hyundai's site for now.
Lexus LC 500
Model Years: 2018–2026
Lexus confirmed that it is pulling the plug on its stunning grand tourer without having announced a direct successor. Celebrated for its concept-car styling and bespoke interior, the LC 500's retirement also marks the loss of one of the very last naturally aspirated V8 engines available in a luxury coupe. Global production is said to end in August this year.
Nissan Ariya
Model Years: 2023–2026
Nissan's Japanese-built electric SUV is taking an official production hiatus for the U.S. market. Hit hard by import tariffs, Nissan is pulling the Ariya from showrooms to focus on the next-gen Leaf, which is built locally. Hopefully the Ariya will make a reappearance here as well, but if not there are some great deals to be had on nearly-new models and CPO (certified Pre-Owned) stock.
Tesla Model S & Model X
Model Years: 2012–2026 (Model S) / 2016–2026 (Model X)
In something of an unexpected move, Tesla announced that its Model S sedan and X SUV will both end production this year. With the vast majority of its production volume having already shifted to the very popular Model 3 and Y, it makes sense for the company to free up factory capacity for other ventures. The Model S, in particular, will be missed as it was the first truly successful mass-market EV.
Toyota GR Supra
Model Years: 2020–2026
The Toyota GR Supra officially ended its seven-year production run in March of this year, with the GR Supra Final Edition. Despite some controversy over it using BMW's architecture and mechanical components, the Supra became an iconic model in its own time. It also bears the distinction of having the most powerful version of BMW's B58 inline-six ever made, producing an impressive 429-hp.
Volvo EX30
Model Years: 2025–2026
Intended to be Volvo's accessible, entry-level electric crossover for the American market, the EX30's lifespan has been cut short due to high import tariffs and rapidly shifting regulatory conditions for foreign-built EVs. The EX30 is longer available to buy new, although it will continue to be sold overseas and a new variant is said to be under development specifically for the U.S.
Volvo V90 Cross Country
Model Years: 2017–2026
2026 is the last model year for the quirky but cool Volvo V90 Cross Country. A high-riding luxurious wagon with a dash of off-road ability ticks many boxes, but unfortunately most consumers didn't see it that way. A lack of demand and Volvo's push towards an all-electric SUV future has spelled the end of this wagon, and there are no plans for a direct replacement in the future.
