Maserati Just Made The GranTurismo And GranCabrio Trofeo More Powerful, But Can They Bring The Brand's Magic Back?
Maserati has updated the GranTurismo and GranCabrio Trofeo for the 2027 model year, giving both grand tourers more power, sharper styling, richer interior details and a standard Sportivo exhaust system. But the GranTurismo and GranCabrio are more than mere models within Maserati's lineup; they, alongside the mid-engine MCPURA, are the cars tasked with reminding people why they fell in love with the brand in the first place.
Maserati's Grecale-its Porsche Macan-fighting performance SUV-might be the brand's bread and butter offering these days, but the GranTurismo and GranCabrio are the cars that make people stop, stare, drool, and momentarily forget that the more logical choice might have been a Porsche 911, BMW M8 or Mercedes-AMG SL. These are the cars that need to remind buyers why the Trident still matters beyond spec sheets and sales figures. For 2027, Maserati seems to understand that power alone is not enough, but power helps nonetheless…
Trofeo Models Now Make 582 Horsepower
The updated GranTurismo Trofeo and GranCabrio Trofeo now use a slightly more powerful version of Maserati's 3.0-litre twin-turbo Nettuno V6, producing 582 horsepower and 457 lb-ft of torque, up 20 hp from before. Both pair that engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. Maserati claims the GranTurismo Trofeo can reach more than 199 mph, while the GranCabrio Trofeo can reach up to 196 mph.
Those numbers are serious, but they don't paint the whole picture. A Maserati has never been about being faster around a race track or down a quarter-mile drag strip. A Maserati has to do something a bit different than most: it has to seduce. That's why the now-standard Sportivo exhaust might actually matter more than the extra 20 horsepower. The Nettuno V6 is technically impressive, and no one should pretend forced induction and six cylinders are somehow foreign to Maserati's history. But the brand also spent years teaching the world that a daily-drivable Maserati could come with the operatic thrill of a Ferrari-derived V8. Those memories don't disappear just because the new car is quicker, smarter, and more efficient.
Basically, the Trofeo's biggest challenge is not simply to be fast and pretty. It has to feel truly special enough that buyers stop mourning the Maseratis they remember and start wanting the Maseratis that actually still exist.
Maserati's Designers Have Sharpened Their Pencils, And The GranTurismo's Face
The styling changes are subtle, but they move in the right direction toward freshness. Maserati says the updated front-end treatment draws inspiration from the MCXtrema, GT2 Stradale and MCPURA, giving the GranTurismo and GranCabrio a more horizontal, technical look. The front intakes have been reshaped, the center splitter has been optimized, and the air curtains have been reworked to manage airflow more effectively.
At the back, both models get clear-lens lighting details, while available gloss-black Tridente wheels widen the track by 10 mm. Maserati says this improves high-speed stability and quick transitional maneuvers. The important thing is that Maserati hasn't compromised what already worked. The GranTurismo remains one of the prettiest luxury coupes on sale, and the GranCabrio remains the same basic idea but with better headroom. The updates make them look a little meaner and a little newer without diluting the poise of either design.
The Cabins Had To Feel More Expensive, Too
Maserati is selling grand tourers, not just track-day toys, which means the cabin has to feel expensive every single time the owner drops into the seat. The GranTurismo and GranCabrio now offer new upholstery choices, including Bordeaux leather with Nude Alcantara, Black and Tan leather, and Mahogany trim, available through the Fuoriserie program. Trofeo models lean into the performance side with available red and ice leather, Alcantara details, carbon-fibre trim and a sportier cabin presentation.
There is even some new hardware to boot. Maserati has redesigned the steering wheel with flatter upper and lower sections, dark satin-aluminum spokes, and either perforated leather or Alcantara accents, depending on trim. The digital clock gets a metal crown, an octagonal shape and updated graphics, while the PRND selector now uses three-dimensional metal controls. Screens include a 12.3-inch central display, an 8.8-inch comfort display, a 12.2-inch instrument cluster and a head-up display.
The GranCabrio adds some extra theatre of its own, with a fabric roof available in five colours and broader Fuoriserie customization. Maserati says the roof opens in 14 seconds and closes in 16 seconds at speeds of up to 31 mph, while an Airscarf neck warmer comes standard on Trofeo and Folgore trims.
The Folgore Might Be Faster, But The Trofeo Carries The Heart And Soul Of The Brand
The all-electric Folgore versions are even more powerful than the updated Trofeo models, producing 751 hp from a three-motor 800-volt layout. They are also more useful than ever, with Maserati quoting up to 251 miles of range for the GranTurismo Folgore and up to 249 miles for the GranCabrio Folgore. But the Trofeo models carry an entirely different burden on their haunches: they have to connect Maserati's past to its present. And it has to convince people that the absence of a Ferrari-derived V8 doesn't mean the absence of Maserati magic.
Final Thoughts: Maserati Needs These Cars To Feel Effortlessly Emotional Again
The 2027 GranTurismo and GranCabrio Trofeo are objectively better than before. They are more powerful, sharper-looking, richer inside and likely more dramatic to hear. None of that is bad news. But Maserati's challenge isn't whether it can build a fast, beautiful grand tourer-it clearly can. The more difficult task is making people believe that choosing one still means something sexy; something chic and worthy of lust.
The GranTurismo and GranCabrio aren't the most practical Maseratis, nor the most efficient, and they're probably not the models that will determine the company's future sales success. But they are the ones that have to carry the brand's emotional future upon their shoulders, and give people a reason to still look twice at the legendary trident emblem. The updated Trofeo models might not solve Maserati's identity problem on their own, but they at least remind us what kind of magic the Trident brand is capable of performing.
