Subaru's Performance-B STI Concept Is Actually Going Into Production
Production Hatchback Disguised as a Concept
When Subaru yanked the covers off the Performance-E STI Concept and the Performance-B STI Concept at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show, it was tough not to get a little giddy. The Performance-E teased what a future electric Subaru performance car might look like.
But the real shocker was the Performance-B STI Concept. Compact, mean-looking, bristling with real aero bits, and rocking a hatchback silhouette, it looked less like a flight of fancy and more like a car just itching for a VIN number.
Turns out, our hunch was right. Subaru has now quietly confirmed on its Japanese WRX website that the Performance-B STI Concept is actually going into production. It's officially one of three new manual-transmission models in the pipeline, all set to land by 2027.
Subaru says the production version of the Performance-B STI Concept will have its own personality, separate from both the Subaru WRX and the BRZ. In the company's own words:
We are currently developing a production version of the "Performance-B STI concept" that was exhibited at Japan Mobility Show 2025. We plan to create a model with a new personality that is different from the WRX and BRZ.
What We Can Expect From the Production Hatchback
Subaru's keeping the juicy specs under wraps for now, but the concept itself gives us a solid taste of what's likely on the way. Under the hood, the Performance-B STI Concept packed a turbocharged boxer engine and Subaru's trademark Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. No official power numbers yet, but this recipe is classic Subaru performance – just the way fans like it.
In the metal, the concept actually looked ready to roll off the assembly line. Flared fenders, a big hood scoop, angry bumpers, side skirts, twin exhausts, and a giant rear wing all screamed ‘serious performance hatch' instead of just another show car.
For what it's worth, the car felt more like a rival to the Toyota GR Corolla or Honda Civic Type R than anything in Subaru's current stable. There's even a bit of that old STI hatchback magic here, just with a sleeker, more grown-up vibe.
Will all those wild aero bits make it to the final car? We'll have to wait and see. But Subaru's confirmation means this was never just a pipe dream, while the stick shift is definitely a huge plus.
More Manuals Are Coming, But America Might Have to Wait
The Performance-B hatch isn't coming alone, either. Subaru's also working on a WRX with the revived TY85 manual transmission – the same tough gearbox family from past WRX STI models. Subaru says it's the perfect base for bringing that old-school WRX spirit into the modern age.
There's also a BRZ-based special on the way, spun off from the STI Sport Type RA announced in late 2025. Subaru's aiming to make the already beloved coupe even lighter and more fun behind the wheel.
North American fans, don't get your hopes up just yet. Subaru hasn't said a word about bringing these cars stateside, and for now, it looks like Japan gets all the fun. However, with manuals still having a cult following in the US – especially among Subaru diehards – it's not impossible we'll see them here down the line.
For now, let's just enjoy the fact that Subaru is still building cars for the faithful – and the Performance-B STI Concept is officially more than just a wild showpiece.
