Anticipated Surfside Beach pier restaurant opens its doors. What they’re serving
An anticipated addition to the newly reconstructed Surfside Pier has officially opened its doors to customers.
The Whistling Duck, a wine and charcuterie bar selected as one of four businesses to operate on the new pier, opened on Friday, according to Surfside Beach Mayor Robert Krouse’s newsletter. The waterfront restaurant is serving locally sourced charcuterie boards and appetizers alongside coastal views and wine selections.
“It is a beautiful location to enjoy some of the finer things in life while watching the waves crash under the pier,” Krouse wrote in his newsletter on Friday.
The wooden Surfside Pier was destroyed by Hurricane Matthew in 2016 and needed to be rebuilt, but construction delays and other issues meant it didn’t open until last year, The Sun News previously reported. Crews broke ground on the new pier in December 2020.
The Whistling Duck operates among its neighbors on the pier: Drippy’s Homemade Ice Cream and Perry’s Bait and Tackle, which are already open, and the Surf Diner, which has faced delays in its opening.
The newly opened restaurant is owner by Mike and Rebecca Wallace, for whom the Surfside Pier is a cherished location. The pier is where the couple got engaged beneath Fourth of July fireworks, and a spot that inspired them to create a unique dining experience and celebrate special moments, according to the restaurant’s website.
Along with carefully crafted charcuterie boards and other bites, the restaurant serves “beachside baskets,” or grab-and-go, picnic-style options, allowing diners to enjoy delicacies on the beach.
The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week, according to its website.
