Myrtle Beach health center ‘temporarily’ closes due to lack of funds
Mindzero, a Myrtle-Beach based wellness center, has temporarily closed as it does not have enough money to operate.
The owner David Semerad sent out an email to his customers at 9:30 p.m. Sunday that said the center will close starting on Monday. Mindzero regular Brandon Kefauver forwarded the email to The Sun News. Semerad wrote he is working to reopen to Mindzero in a sustainable way.
The Sun News called the Myrtle Beach Mindzero and contacted its general email but did not receive a response before publication.
Mindzero offers contrast therapy, which involves moving from a 185-degree sauna to a pool of 55-degree water. This is meant to shock the mind “to zero” and help a person relax.
It started as a pop-up event at the Myrtle Beach State Park in 2021 before becoming a brick-and-mortar business in 2022, The Sun News reported. Since then, a Mindzero has opened a location in Mount Pleasant and it was slated to open seven locations across the country, according to its website.
However, from Semerad’s email, it appears the expansion hurt the business.
“Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to raise the capital needed to support the growth we were heading toward. Our cash reserves dropped so low that I had to make the heartbreaking decision to let most of the team go,” he wrote.
Kefauver said it was tough news to wake up to. He enjoyed attending a class every Thursday and said that most of the classes were at or near capacity when he went.
The Myrtle Beach Mindzero also closed for renovations for most of May, which again happened with little warning, Kefauver said.
“I find it weird there was zero notice and heads up and they sent the email last night,” Kefauver said on Monday afternoon.
