Social media speculation surrounding a Surfside Beach, SC store recently has caused some to wonder if a new discount retail business will take its place.

A Facebook user posted March 1, 2024, claiming that Old Time Pottery at 1870 Highway 17 North would be replaced by Gabe’s, an off-price retail and clothing outlet founded in West Virginia. Gabe’s acquired Old Time Pottery in April 2023; the initial Facebook user’s post referenced this sale.

Indeed, Surfside Beach’s Old Time Pottery recently had an everything-is-on-sale event, where the entire store was 10-40 percent discounted.

However, Old Town Pottery Manager Dave O’Hagan said the store is not closing, but it is getting rid of old inventory and making way for new merchandise. While O’Hagan confirmed the store is not closing, he declined to answer when asked if Old Time Pottery is converting to a Gabe’s. Instead, O’Hagan directed The Sun News to contact Gabe’s media team.

Gabe’s Media Contact, Leigh Guldig, could not be reached for comment before publication. While the Surfside Beach Old Time Pottery’s status is unknown, other stores across the country were replaced by Gabe’s. The Springfield Business Journal reported in February 2024 that Springfield, Mo.’s Old Time Pottery was getting replaced by a new Gabe’s.
