Horry County manufacturer in Conway will add 38 jobs in $3.7 million expansion project

A Conway manufacturer is expanding to add 38 new jobs with a $3.7 million investment.

Carolina Refractories, Inc. makes monolithic refractories, which consist of unshaped material that is resistant to decomposition by extreme temperatures, according to a press release.

“The Coordinating Council for Economic Development approved job development credits related to this project” according to the release. “The council also awarded a $250,000 Rural Infrastructure Fund grant to Horry County to assist with the costs of site preparation and building construction.”

The SC Governor’s office announced the expansion of the Horry County facility on Nov. 30. The company is located at Ascott Valley Industrial Park in Conway,

“When companies like Carolina Refractories, Inc. continue to grow in the state, it’s further proof that we have the business-friendly environment where companies succeed,” said Gov. Henry McMaster, in the release.

The expansion will include constructing a new 30,000-square-foot facility, which will include monolithic refractory manufacturing equipment and a new precast shape division to manufacture precast refractory shapes, according to the release.

“Carolina Refractories, Inc. is extremely excited to announce our latest investment in Horry County and the state of South Carolina,” said Lee Whaley, Carolina Refractories, Inc. vice president of precast and sales in the release. “This new plant will provide superior products and services to our customers, and we are excited to begin construction.” -

The company was founded in 1986 by Ray Muffley. The company manufactures and supplies refractory products, serving the steel, aluminum, cement, foundry, incineration, power and paper industries, according to the release.
