The start of the demolition of Santee Cooper’s Grainger Generating Plant in Conway has been delayed a couple of weeks due to weather delays at the contractor’s current job, Santee Cooper spokeswoman Mollie Gore said Friday.

The work, to be done by National Salvage and Service Corp., originally was set to start next week. It is expected to be completed by the summer of 2016.

Santee Cooper announced in 2012 that it would retire the Grainger Plant, which has two coal-fired units, as well as the two coal units at its Jeffries Plant in Moncks Corner.

The Grainger Plant was constructed in 1966, but for at least several years, its use has been limited to supplying power during peak periods.

Interior equipment will be removed first, with coal conveying equipment dismantling to start in June. The exterior smokestacks are projected to be dismantled early next year.

The company is currently removing and recycling coal ash from two ash ponds on the site and that work will continue as the dismantling is underway.

Once the plant demolition is finished, Santee Cooper said the ground will be layered with soil, graded and covered with grass.
