Cherry Grove, SC, restaurant may have closed less than a year after opening
A sports bar located just blocks from the beach in Cherry Grove seems to have quietly closed a year after opening.
The Twisted Penguin, 219 Sea Mountain Highway, first welcomed customers in April 2024, The Sun News reported. In February, 2025, the sports bar and grill announced on Instagram that it would close temporarily.
However, the summer season has begun, and The Twisted Penguin still appears closed. On May 26, the outside chairs and tables had a thick layer of dirt and appeared not to have been cleaned in several weeks.
Inside, the bar had no liquor bottles, and there was a pile of old mail on the hostess stand.
The Sun News reached out to the owner, Shawn Kelly, but did not hear back before publication.
Kelly told The Sun News that The Twisted Penguin would remain open through the off-season, unlike Basil’s Pizza, the restaurant located in the building before.
