Meet Mika of SC CARES
Mika is a beautiful Sun Conure, also called Sun Parakeets, normally found in South America.
Mika came to live at SC CARES from a rescuer in Virginia in 2010. She is one of the most personable parrots you will ever meet! Even our tours are often gifted with her climbing on their shoulders. Mika loves to give kisses, if you’re one of her chosen and will call out to those humans when they arrive. The tone of her peeps is pretty high pitched so a continually calling would most definitely get your attention; it’s fairly loud for such a small bird. Sun Conures are about 12 inches long but that includes their tail feathers. I’d say these little birds are like a starburst candy, they may be small but they’re packed pull of punch! So much personality in such a compact little creature!
When Mika arrived she was missing nearly her entire left foot, she has a nub with no nails. The lady that brought her had no idea how this happened or if it might have been a birth defect. Mika adapted well to her missing foot and uses her beak to get around and is not slowed down by it at all. We also don’t know how many other homes Mika lived in or exactly how old she really is. Sun Conures have a life span of 30 years so hopefully Mika will be with us for a long time to come. We listed her age as a guess and have her at 9 years old currently. Sadly her kind is listed on the endangered list due to loss of habitat and being captured for the exotic pet industry. If you’re entertaining the thought of having an exotic as your companion, please adopt and don’t buy. We don’t adopt out but can give direction of rescues that do!
