Incorporated | 1938; Myrtle Beach became a city in 1957 and celebrated its 75th birthday in 2013.
Origin of name | It was chosen in a name-the-town contest in 1900. “Edgewater” finished in second place.
What its known for | Along with being known for its 60 miles of beaches, the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk and Promenade has been named to several national lists as among the best boardwalks in the nation. It stretches 1.2 miles from Second Avenue Pier to 14th Avenue Pier and is home to the SkyWheel, oceanfront dining and shopping, and the best view on the Strand. It is also a well-known golfers destination.
Major events | The Beach Ball Classic basketball tournament, South Carolina’s Largest Garage Sale, the MyrtleBeach.com Myrtle Beach Marathon, Oktoberfest, Military Appreciation Days, Coastal Uncorked, Hot Summer Nights, the World Am, and the Beach, Boogie & BBQ Festival.
What’s new | An overpass on the south end of U.S. 17 on the outskirts of Myrtle Beach city limits is scheduled for completion by the end of 2014 that crosses over S.C. 707. Construction has begun on a sports center for Myrtle Beach near the convention center, and construction of an $11.9 million deepwater ocean outfall system at Fourth Avenue North in Myrtle Beach began in September 2014.
