Living Here | All about Georgetown
Established | In 1729, the third oldest city in South Carolina, behind Charleston and Beaufort. By 1840, the city and Georgetown County had become one of the nation’s wealthiest locales as a result of exports of indigo and “Carolina Gold” rice that were grown on local plantations.
Origin of name | The city was named for King George II of England.
Major events | Winyah Bay Heritage Festival in March, the Wooden Boat Show in October and Taste of Georgetown in November.
What’s new | A $14 million drainage project under construction for several years was finally completed and is working as designed to keep water from heavy rains off U.S. 17 and U.S. 501.
