There are many different kinds of barbeque throughout the South, all of them delicious in their own right. Down in Pawleys Island is the state’s only Moe’s Original Bar-b-que, a restaurant chain known for specializing in Alabama-style barbeque.
A franchise Moe’s may be, but this eatery in the South Strand never forgoes the casual and amiable atmosphere that our part of the country is known for. Every food item on the menu is made on location, so simply walking into the building gives customers a wonderful whiff of the meats being smoked.
The main menu, which is generally the same with all locations, has everything to make a Southern barbeque perfect. There is pulled pork, smoked chicken, ribs, even fried catfish, wings, and smoked turkey. Sides are also a mouthwatering display of soul food, although this part of the menu can change daily.
Typically, the sides include collard greens, slaw, and Mississippi mud pies. There is also often mac and cheese, green beans, and succotash. But the list continues on, with some days serving red rice and smoked gumbo. All of these sides and more are made fresh and since the available food changes regularly, Moe’s encourages guests to visit their Facebook page or call in to find out what the sides of the day are.
With a homemade touch that will no doubt make many Southerners nostalgic, Moe’s food is wonderful. The fried catfish was served perfectly crispy on the outside while the inside remained moist and crumbling. Cornbread dressing and green beans topped off an amazing meal that was almost too much food to handle.
Of course, Moe’s pulled pork is also fantastic, with delicious barbeque sauce on buns lightly grilled to add crispness. The mac and cheese and Mississippi mud pies were also big winners, approved by child and adult alike. Keep in mind, since Moe’s smokes their meats on a daily basis so it’s possible for the restaurant to run out of some of their food options.
Moe’s also has a full bar complete with bar food, specials, and Happy Hour deals, from 4 p.m.-7 p.m. on a daily basis. Bottled beers include favorites like Bud Light and Heineken, plus seasonal selections. Their draft beers also change weekly, including local and seasonal options. Wine and cocktails are part of the party too, so for adults of age there is plenty to choose from.
This barbeque house still has more to offer their locals. There are games to play, like cornhole, occasional events, and live music on Sundays. Moe’s is also known for their catering, where the team will smoke the meats on-site to provide the freshest food possible for any event, and even clean up the mess afterwards.
The food is wonderful, the people are friendly, and you’ll never go thirsty. Moe’s Original Bar-b-que in Pawleys Island embodies every good aspect of the South, from the porch to the kitchen.
