A new bakery is making tummies rumble down in Pawleys Island. The name doesn’t exactly inspire imagery of towering, four-layered cakes, but that’s what you’ll find in Boll Weevil Café.

In between the popular Sabella’s Italian restaurant and Indigo Exchange off U.S. 17, this new bistro fits right in.

The porch for Boll Weevil Café has been extended around the building, which gives customers plenty of options for eating outside. Inside, the restaurant still seems a little bare, but the large display of cakes and other baked goods is quickly gets all the attention. It’s hard not to stare at the whopping cake slices, although actually choosing one is quite difficult.

If you make it past the display of temptations, the seating for dining is in separate rooms, which helps the café keep a more personal feel. The menu, much like their desserts, is impressive, with their specialty being Lowcountry meals.

They do try to provide options for those who have preferences, such as the array of salads and soups. This includes some unique creations, like Boll Weevil’s Tomato Apple soup, which is exactly what it sounds like, or the Boll Weevil salad topped with sirloin.

The hard workers at Boll Weevil are very friendly and accommodating as well, and willing to answer any questions that pop up (all of which, from this party, ended up being about desserts).

For adults of age, this friendly place also has alcoholic beverages on a separate menu.

The fried green tomatoes are great, all of the bread is homemade, and best of all, they do their best to support local farmers and businesses. This café is certainly on the right path for growth, and they’re growing right into our hearts in the meantime.

Ultimately, however, what people are talking about are their cakes. And with good reason! The cakes are quite enormous and extremely decadent. Even one slice is easy to share, though if you will want to would be the question. They also have cheesecakes, baked goods such as apple blossoms, tiramisu, and pies like Key Lime.

Even in the afternoon when the remaining slices have been sitting most of the day, they were still pretty moist. The tiramisu and apple blossoms would definitely be at their best when enjoyed fresh, so keep that in mind if you plan on making a trip to the café. Death by Chocolate turned out to be aptly named, since a few bites of this rich cake were plenty. The Coffee Toffee cake was probably a favorite amongst the party, although some might say more toffee wouldn’t be a bad thing!

Pawleys Island has a lot of wonderful things, and Boll Weevil Café just adds to the splendor. For Lowcountry dishes freshly made and desserts that will rot any sweet tooth, drop on by and enjoy all the charm the south has to offer.
