For the tourists who love to eat in extremes, restaurants across the Myrtle Beach area have food challenges that test the limits.

Whether a visitor wants to attempt to eat several pounds of meat or pancakes in one sitting, or a group is looking for a good meal to split, here is where to find the largest amount of food across the Grand Strand.

Fox’s Pizza Den

For the pizza fanatics, get ready to down at least 17 slices of pizza. Fox’s Pizza Den in Socastee offers a 30-inch challenge where up to three people have 45 minutes to finish the entire meal, said cashier Jerusalyn Dodge. Contestants may order any type of pizza.

In the past three years, over 20 groups have attempted the challenge, but no one has succeeded. Dodge said the first group to do so will get T-shirts and each person will get a $20 gift card. Subsequent winners will receive a T-shirt.

For those unable to finish, or looking to order an insane amount of pizza, the pie starts at $54.99 for cheese, and each topping is an additional $7, Dodge said. The restaurant asks people to call at least one hour ahead of time during the week and one day prior on the weekend.

Dick’s Big Meat Challenge

Visitors can head to Dick’s Last Resort at Barefoot Landing if they are in the mood for a lot of beef. The food challenge includes two large steaks, a 12-inch hot dog, nachos, a house salad, a double portion of cheddar mashed potatoes and a double portion of broccoli.

Eaters have to finish the meal within an hour or less to win. Champions receive the meal for free, a free T-shirt and a certificate of completion. Losers have to pay $79.99.

Nannie Annie’s breakfast challenge

Located on S.C. 90 outside Conway, customers can try the breakfast challenge at Nannie Annie’s Breakfast and Lunch. The meal includes three eggs, either three pieces of sausage or six slices of bacon and three pancakes larger than dinner plates, said host Barbara Matta.

Contestants have 90 minutes to finish the meal in order to win their choice of a T-shirt, water bottle or coffee mug as well as a photo on the wall of fame. They are not allowed to leave the table. If someone is unable to finish, they have to pay $14.99 for a meal.

While many have completed the challenge, Matta said people also like to order the meal to share.

River City Cafe Double Dawg Dare Ya

Although this is not a challenge, the well-loved burger joint offers two massive burgers for whoever is hungry enough to try. Each costs $21.99.

The “Kitchen Sink” Burger Platter has two patties topped with Texas chili, bacon, grilled onions, jalapeños, sautéed mushrooms, Swiss cheese, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles, mustard, and mayo served on two grilled cheese sandwiches with a side of French fries, two giant fried onion rings and coleslaw.

The “OMG” Burger Platter comes with two patties topped with bacon, Swiss cheese, cheddar cheese, mayo, lettuce, tomato, and fried onion strings in between two egg and cheese sandwiches and served with a side of fries, two giant fried onion rings and coleslaw.

Thorny’s massive burger

For the cheeseburger purists who believe River City Cafe has too many toppings, Thorny’s offers a “6 stack burger.” The cheeseburger comes with six patties and six slices of cheese along with tri-fries and a pickle.

The restaurant markets the burger as a challenge. The menu says no sharing, although the terms of the challenge are unclear. Thorny’s did not respond to a request to comment prior to publication.
