Chances are, if you haven’t been to Benjamin’s Bakery in Surfside Beach, you have probably had some of its bakery items at local restaurants and didn’t even know it.

And now, the bakery, which has been in business for 30 years, is not only known for its food items locally, it has been named the best bakery in South Carolina by a national food magazine.

Taste of Home named a top bakery in each state across the country based on recommendations by “community cooks.” Benjamin’s Bakery, at 810 3rd Ave. South, was the top pick for South Carolina.

The magazine described the locally-owned bakery as the place to stop when heading to work or heading to the beach.

The magazine never contacted the restaurant before the article was published, according to Tayler Porter, the bakery’s administrative office assistant and handler of the business’ marketing and social media.

It wasn’t until one of the bakery’s employees happened to see the article that the business even knew that they had received the honor.

“I think truthfully, it all comes down to management from the top that makes it or breaks it,” Porter said.

That top management would be founder and owner Lee Zulanch, who came from Long Island, New York, and first opened Benjamin’s Bagel Bakery in 1994. The business eventually grew to what it is now, offering breads, rolls, buns, pastries, cakes, coffee and sandwiches.

Their bakery items are used at such Myrtle Beach area restaurants as Dead Dog Saloon, Sea Captain’s House, Wicked Tuna and RipTydz, among many more.

All of the items are made in house, Porter said.

It’s that quality and consistency that Porter believes has won over their customers.

“We have daily things that come out … that they want and love,” Porter said.

The bakery is among the top five bakeries in the Myrtle Beach area rated by Yelp.

It comes in as No. 3 with a 4.5 rating (out of 5) with 321 reviews.
