The owners of two area restaurants are opening a butcher shop next month in Myrtle Beach.

The Salty Butcher touts itself as an old-school neighborhood butcher shop that will offer both meats and seafood from the Carolinas. Its grand opening is Oct. 14 at 7901 N. Kings Highway.

In addition to meats and seafood, the shop also will offer deli, produce, cheeses, wine, craft beers, marinades and specialty products. And it will have a drive-through where people can place their order ahead of time and then pick it up for lunch or on their way home from work, said co-member Taylor Smith.

The shop is operated by three local natives who have years of owning and operating local steak and seafood restaurants along the Grand Strand, including Chuck’s Steakhouse in Myrtle Beach and Captain Archie’s in North Myrtle Beach.

“Growing up across the Grand Strand, fishing, hunting and really having that fresh quality, prime product, and then shopping around, we really didn’t have that in the Myrtle Beach area,” Smith said about why the three decided to open a butcher shop. “That was a passion of ours.”

“Growing up in the Grand Strand, being able to fish and hunt on demand meant fresh quality food for dinner in our household. Being lucky enough to enjoy that fresh quality, prime product, was something we wanted everyone to experience, as our local community has so much to offer,” Smith said about why the three decided to open a butcher shop. “After shopping around, we realized we really didn’t have a true neighborhood butcher and seafood store in the Myrtle Beach area that offered these local delicacies. That was a passion of ours.”

There are the big box and grocery stores, but there isn’t an experience of high-quality meats, Smith said.

Smith said the operators want to provide the same quality of meats at the butcher shop that they provide in their restaurants. The restaurants also will use some of the products offered at the shop, Smith said.

There will be two dedicated butchers and a deli specialist, Smith said.

Most of the meats and seafood will come from South and North Carolina, partnering with such businesses as There’s No Place Like Charleston, which offers specialty foods such as coffee, barbecue sauce, okra, peaches and pickles, and Cheshire Pork in North Carolina, which offers everything from baby back ribs to bacon.

The butcher shop also is partnering with local breweries, offering several craft beers, Smith said.

The grand opening, from noon to 5 p.m., will include vendors that will offer samples of the products in the shop.
