Myrtle Beach SC area Ron Jon’s and Pizza Heaven get low grades: Slimy meat, expired warm food

Each week the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control visits area grocery stores, mobile food units, retail food establishments and more.

These visits are unannounced routine inspections. Some are follow-up inspections due to low scores in the previous 10 day period, which are also unannounced.

The reason for the inspections are to make sure establishments are in compliance with SC regulations and guidelines.

R | Indicates a Routine Inspection - Unannounced and conducted on a frequency determined by the facility’s Risk Category on a frequency of one to four times a year.

F | Indicates a Follow-Up Inspection - Conducted within 10 days of a Routine Inspection that requires follow-up verification.

This information is provided by SC Department of Health and Environmental Control:

The following restaurants had unannounced follow-up inspections (from previous week June 26 - 30) this week July 3 - July 7, 2023.

  1. American Steak & Oyster Bar located at 3797 U.S. 17 Bus. Murrells Inlet, had a routine inspection on June 28 and scored 80 percent “B” grade. American Steak & Oyster Bar had a follow-up inspection on July 7 and scored 97 percent “A” grade, according to the SC Food Grade Report.
  2. Atlas Tap House located at 1004 Chester St., Myrtle Beach, had a routine inspection on June 30 and scored 84 percent “B” grade. The following violations were found by inspectors according to the SC Food Grade Report. The Retail Food Establishment Report. Atlas Tap House had a follow-up inspection on July 7 and scored 90 percent “A” grade, according to the SC Food Grade Report.
  3. Crab Daddy’s Calabash Seafood located at 3043 U.S. 17 S., Murrells Inlet, had a routine inspection on June 27 and scored 71 percent “C” grade. The following violations were found by inspectors according to the SC Food Grade Report. The Retail Food Establishment Report. Crab Daddy’s had a follow-up inspection on July 7 and scored 95 percent “A” grade, according to the SC Food Grade Report.

  4. Golden Kitchen located at 820 Surfside Dr., Surfside Beach had a routine inspection on June 28 and scored 80 percent “B” grade. The following violations were found by inspectors according to the SC Food Grade Report. The Retail Food Establishment Report. Golden Kitchen had a follow-up inspection on July 7 and scored 98 percent “A” grade, according to the SC Food Grade Report.
  5. Mulligan’s located at 1359 U.S. 17, Little River had a routine inspection on June 26 and scored 82 percent “B” grade. The following violations were found by inspectors according to the SC Food Grade Report. The Retail Food Establishment Report. Mulligan’s had a follow-up inspection on July 5 and scored 89 percent “A” grade, according to the SC Food Grade Report.
  6. Panera Bread #4964 located at 1296 U.S. 17 N., N. Myrtle Beach had a routine inspection on June 28 and scored 85 percent “B” grade. The following violations were found by inspectors according to the SC Food Grade Report. The Retail Food Establishment Report Panera Bread had a follow-up inspection on July 7 and scored 97 percent “A” grade, according to the SC Food Grade Report according to the SC Food Grade Report.
  7. Walk-On’s Bistreaux located at 61 Rodeo Drive, Myrtle Beach had a routine inspection on June 30 and scored 82 percent “B” grade. The following violations were found by inspectors according to the SC Food Grade Report. The Retail Food Establishment Report. Walk-On’s has not had a follow-up inspection at the time of this report.

The following restaurant’s had unannounced routine inspections for the week of July 3 - 7 and here is what inspectors found:

  1. Ron Jon’s located at 3218 Waccamaw Blvd., Myrtle Beach had a routine inspection on July 5 and scored 70 percent “C” grade. The following violations were found by inspectors according to the SC Food Grade Report. The Retail Food Establishment Report lists the following: “ Hand washing sink by slicer observed blocked and inaccessible. Molded and wilted lettuce observed stored in prep cooler on the cook line. Slimy meat observed stored in the low boy on the cook line. Uncovered pasta observed stored in the large bowl. The sanitizer concentration level at the mechanical dish machine was measured at 0 ppm of a chlorine-based sanitizer using chlorine-based test strips provided by the facility. Make top on the cook line: cut lettuce 51 degrees, drawers at the grill:: sliced American cheese 51 degrees, sliced,pepper jack cheese 46 degrees, sliced yellow American cheese 47 degrees - pizza prep cooler: sauce 54 degrees, shredded mozzarella cheese 45 degrees, low boy: uncooked steak 54 degrees, cooked pasta 49 degrees. Thermometers not observed in cold holding units to measure the air temperature in the warmest part of the cooler. Working containers of food that are not in their original containers and not easily identifiable with a common name - such as oils, flour, herbs, potato flakes, salt, spices and sugar. Flies observed throughout the facility, landed on food containers. Commercial pest control company came by during the inspection. Pizza boxes observed stored on floor.” A follow-up inspection is scheduled to be performed within the next 10 days.
  2. Pizza Heaven located at: 708 North Kings Hwy., Myrtle Beach had an unannounced routine inspection on July 5 and scored 80 percent “B” grade. The following violations were found according to the SC Food Grade Report. The Retail Food Establishment Report stated the following: “Hands not washed before changing gloves, hand sink blocked by table and other items, paper towels not provided at hand sink in kitchen. Hand washing sign not provided. Date marking not observed on ready to eat foods. No refrigerator has temp lower than 46 degrees. Outside doors being propped opened, flies observed.” A follow-up inspection is scheduled to be performed within the next 10 days.
  3. Pizza Heaven had an unannounced follow-up inspection on July 6 and scored 84 percent “B” grade. The following violations were found according to the SC Food Grade Report. Another follow-up inspection will be performed within 10 days.

“INSPECTION KEY”

A | 100 - 88 - The retail food establishment earned more than 87 points. Food safety practices appeared to meet the requirements of Regulation 61-25.

B | 87 - 78 - The retail food establishment earned 78-87 points. Food safety practices need improvement.

C | 77 & Below - The retail establishment earned less than 78 points. Food safety practices need significant improvement.

R | Indicates a Routine Inspection - Unannounced and conducted on a frequency determined by the facility’s Risk Category on a frequency of one to four times a year.

F | Indicates a Follow-Up Inspection - Conducted within 10 days of a Routine Inspection that requires follow-up verification.
