Bloody meat drippings and excessive violations found by inspectors in Myrtle Beach area
The week of May 8 - 12 two Myrtle Beach area convenience stores had unannounced routine inspections and did not earn an “A” grade for various violations that were found by inspectors.
Both of these facilities did have follow-up inspections the week of May 15 - 19, which were also unannounced.
This information is provided by SC Department of Health and Environmental Control:
- Panthers Express located at 3886 Hwy. 701 N., Conway, had a routine inspection on May 9 and scored 80 percent “B” grade. Panthers Express had a follow up inspection on May 18 and received 100 percent “A” grade, according to the SC Food Grade Report.
- Refuel 51 located at 6151 Hwy. 707, Myrtle Beach had a routine inspection on May 11 and scored 86 percent “B” grade. Refuel 51 had a follow-up inspection on May 19 and received 97 percent “A” grade, according to the SC Food Grade Report.
The week of May 15 - 19, inspectors found two popular Myrtle Beach eateries with violations during unannounced routine inspections.
- Manny’s Deli located at 5702-A S. Kings Hwy., Myrtle Beach, had an unannounced routine inspection on May 16 and scored 85 percent ”B” grade. “Certified Food Protection Manager certificate was expired. Observed blood from a roast beef spilling onto other storage shelves of the existing residential refrigerator. Observed roast beef cooling in the existing residential refrigerator. The product did not properly cool within 6 hours. Cleaning Frequency (Priority Violation) observed the in-use slicer with food build-up from the previous day.,- Advised that food contact equipment that is in continuous use must be cleaned at a minimum of every 4 hours. Observed steaks thawing at room temperature. Observed soiled surfaces on the interior and exterior of the make top cooler, soiled counter surfaces, below the toaster ovens, build-up on the sliding tracks of the display cooler. Observed soiled floor and wall surfaces throughout the kitchen.” It was noted on the report that “failure to correct these violations could result in downgrading.” A follow-up inspection is scheduled to be performed within 10 days, according to the SC Food Grade Report.
- Popeyes of Myrtle Beach located at 5910 S. Kings Hwy., Myrtle Beach had an unannounced routine inspection on May 16 and scored 81 percent “B” grade. “Observed cooked chicken marked with expired discard times, the observed chicken is 30 minutes past it’s discard time. The ‘6’ marking indicated a discard time of 12:30 p.m. According to the person in charge this chicken was observed at 1 p.m. Observed boxed food stored below a leaking fan in the walk-in freezer, boxed food stored on the floor in the walk-in cooler, soiled cardboard used for shelving in the walk-in cooler. Observed separating floor seams in the kitchen that are no longer easily cleanable. Advised the person in charge that food employees’ fingernails shall be maintained to be cleanable, the length may not to exceed beyond the fingertips; and fingernail polish or artificial fingernails are not allowed unless covered with gloves. Observed a food employee with long fingernails that extended beyond their fingertips. The facility has voluntarily closed. The facility cannot reopen until determined by the department,” according to the SC Food Grade Report.
- Popeyes of Myrtle Beach located at 5910 S. Kings Hwy., Myrtle Beach had a follow-up inspection on May 17 and scored 99 percent “A” grade. The only violation found that was not corrected was “Observed separating floor seams in the kitchen that are no longer easily cleanable.,” according to the SC Food Grade Report. The facility was allowed to reopen.
The Sun News did reach out to Popeyes for a comment and was unable to speak with a manager.

F | Indicates a Follow-Up Inspection - Conducted within 10 days of a Routine Inspection that requires follow-up verification.
