Myrtle Beach area inspectors report handling of raw chicken with bare hands, no hand washing

Last week we reported two restaurants having low scores during routine inspections (week of April 24-28).

Both of these restaurants had a follow-up inspection and here are the results:

This information is provided by SC Department of Health and Environmental Control:

  1. Lobster House Seafood, located at 5301 S. Kings Highway, Myrtle Beach, had a routine inspection on April 26 and scored 78% “B” grade. A follow-up inspection was done on May 5 and it scored a 97% “A” grade.
  2. Panda, located at 3320 4th Ave., Conway, had a routine inspection on April 27 and scored 70% “C” grade. A follow-up inspection was done on May 4 and it scored a 97 % “A” grade.

When a restaurant is out of compliance in a routine inspection, it is noted on a SC Food Grade report and the establishment has a follow-up inspection within 10 days to correct the violations.

R | Indicates a Routine Inspection - Unannounced and conducted on a frequency determined by the facility’s Risk Category on a frequency of one to four times a year.

F | Indicates a Follow-Up Inspection - Conducted within 10 days of a Routine Inspection that requires follow-up verification.

This week (May 1-5) the following establishments had unannounced routine inspections and here are the scores, grades and reasons that they did not receive an “A” grade.

  1. Food Lion #706 Deli located at 2234 S. Fraser St., Georgetown, had a routine inspection on May 2 and scored 82% “B” grade. “3 compartment sink was set up to wash, rinse and sanitize. Was told that they were out of sanitizer. Toxic materials observed stored on top, of small prep cooler, along side self service containers and are not stored to prevent contamination of food and equipment. Small prep cooler observed with ambient temperature of 60 F. Small prep cooler observed with molded food debris along the bottom shelf. “ A follow-up inspection will be performed within 10 days according to the SC Food Grade Report.
  2. Golden Kitchen located at 820 Surfside Drive, Surfside Beach, had a routine inspection on May 1 and scored 73% “C” grade. “Observed multiple employees not washing their hands properly after handling raw chicken with their bare hands. Observed no soap used during hand washing. Observed no paper towels used to dry hands after hand washing. Observed hand washing for less than 5 seconds. No paper towels readily available at the only hand sink in the kitchen. Observed a mixing bowl with raw chicken residue stored on top of shrimp. Containers of food stored uncovered in the walk-in freezer and reach in freezer. Observed working containers of food that are not in their original containers and not labeled with the common name. Observed black grime build-up at the 3-compartment sink.” A follow-up inspection is scheduled to be performed within 10 days, “Failure to correct may result in “C” grade remaining posted,” according to the Retail Food Establishment Inspection Report.
  3. Lakewood Trading Post located at 5901 S. Kings Highway, Myrtle Beach, had a routine inspection on May 3 and scored 80% “B” grade. “No soap readily available at the hand sink in the dish area. Observed the slicer, stored as clean, soiled with food build-up. Cook line - make top cooler: country ham 54 degrees, sliced cheese 45 degrees. Coffee area - opened half & half 47 degrees, ice cream area - opened milk 45 degrees. Observed ready to eat foods, prepared and held beyond 24 hours, with date marking exceeding 7days. Kitchen - make top cooler: sliced salami dated 4/3 Back kitchen - 2-door standing cooler: sliced turkey dated 4/25, opened hot dogs dated 4/24.” A follow-up inspection is scheduled to be performed within 10 days, “Failure to correct may result in down grading,” according to the Retail Food Establishment Inspection Report.
  4. Landolfi’s Italian Pastry Shop located at 9305 U.S. 17, Pawleys Island, had a routine inspection on May 4 and scored 79% “B” grade. “Employee drinks without lids in food prep areas. No paper towels available at hand sink in front prep area. Wet wiping cloths not stored in sanitizer bucket.” A follow-up inspection is scheduled to be performed within 10 days according to the Retail Food Establishment Inspection Report.
  5. Pawleys Raw Bar located at 9448 Ocean Highway, Pawleys Island, had a routine inspection on May 1 and scored 83% “B” grade. “Paper towels not provided at hand sink. Draft beer cooler and mixed ice drink machine draining to buckets at the bar. Rice 52 degrees in lidded container , product greater than 4” deep from previous night.” A follow-up inspection is scheduled to be performed within 10 days according to the SC Food Grade Report.



“INSPECTION KEY”

A | 100 - 88 - The retail food establishment earned more than 87 points. Food safety practices appeared to meet the requirements of Regulation 61-25.

B | 87 - 78 - The retail food establishment earned 78-87 points. Food safety practices need improvement.

C | 77 & Below - The retail establishment earned less than 78 points. Food safety practices need significant improvement.

R | Indicates a Routine Inspection - Unannounced and conducted on a frequency determined by the facility’s Risk Category on a frequency of one to four times a year.
