Two Myrtle Beach area restaurants received low scores due to employees not washing their hands and evidence of roaches, inspection reports show.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control conducts inspections every month and scores establishments based on their practices.

Here are the lowest scores from April 4 through April 8:

The Grumpy Monk, on U.S. 501 in Myrtle Beach, scored a 71% or “C” during a routine check on April 5.

The establishment had stored uncovered food on rack in a walk-in freezer, according to the DHEC report. It stated inspectors found employees not washing their hands in between tasks. They also found uncooked food with dates exceeding seven days, which is when food must be thrown out.

There was also food found on freezer’s floor, according to the report. Inspectors found build up on and under equipment in the restaurant.

The Grumpy Monk received a 100% or an “A” during a follow up inspection on April 13.

Hong Kong, on Main Street in North Myrtle Beach, scored a 78% or “B” during a routine check on April 8.

Inspectors found employees had placed some food on a shelf in the cooler without any covering, according to the report. There was ready-to-eat food prepared for longer than 24 hours without any dates, and some of it exceeded seven days.

Inspectors found debris inside the freezer, along with grease on the fryers, hood filters on the cook line and other kitchen items.

They also recorded seeing dead roaches in the restaurant, according to the report.

Hong Kong received a 98% or “A” after a follow up inspection on April 15.
