Any restaurant near a college campus knows if it wants student business, it has to have the right thing: cheap food. It’s a plus if that food is delicious, and even better is food in a fun environment. Luckily for local chanticleers, Tongy’s Shmackhouse fits the bill perfectly.
This bar in Conway is located in University Commons, right across the street from Coastal Carolina University’s campus. What’s more, Tongy’s knows exactly who it’s catering to and makes no pretenses otherwise. Numerous television screens hang above the bar, games are tucked away in a corner, and best of all, the walls are painted teal. However, despite the overwhelming evidence of a college hangout, in the quiet afternoon hours during classes, some of the older population still gladly partake of what Tongy’s has to offer.
Those visiting this restaurant for the first time are sure to enjoy the fun and casual atmosphere, like the blackboard on the wall banning some unlucky students for decades, or the dollar bills stapled around the bar with messages from visitors near and far. The menu, however, is by far the most entertaining and worth an entire reading. Some of it is witty, some of it is downright silly, and all of it is amusing.
Much of the menu consists of meaty meals with a few vegetarian options and salads. There are burgers, wings, wraps, barbecue — even a take on stir fry. Fries or onion rings can be added to each entree for a little more money, replacing the house slaw as a side.
While the fries may have been a little disappointing, coming out lukewarm and perhaps too salty, they were still hard to stop eating. However, Tongy’s really shines with its burgers. Not only was it fantastically delicious, the burger was far too big to finish in one sitting. For such a large burger, this eatery really has some decent prices.
Besides the delectable burgers, there is plenty else for partygoers to enjoy. Happy Hour is every Monday through Friday from 4-7 p.m. with a select number of domestic drafts and bottles going for $2, some cheaper appetizers and some already awesome burgers, made better with a $5 pricetag. Tongy’s also has events regularly, from DJs, to beer pong, to “Beat the Clock” on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and Wing Wednesdays.
Although families may want to avoid this restaurant on the weekends, when its closing hours (according to its website) are “until the fun stops,” Tongy’s Shmackhouse is friendly and inexpensive enough for all ages, not just the ravenous students across the street. Some of its billboards boast having the No. 1 burger, for which Tongy’s certainly has a compelling argument.
