Kicks! Quicks | Cheesesteak U offers variety, along with namesake sandwich
Cheesesteak U is still going strong in its new location and is a longtime favorite for the nearby Coastal Carolina University campus.
Obviously, this casual dining experience is known for its cheesesteaks, and for good reason. However, it hasn’t remained so loved for so long simply because of its namesake. With other delicious items on the menu, plus the options for takeout, delivery or event catering, Cheesesteak U will doubtless remain a local staple for years to come.
The tiny shopping center the restaurant is in has a minimal amount of parking space, though visitors desperate for their hit of cheesesteak always find a way. The interior is also small but charming, with a vintage feel from the checkered floor to the retro signs on the walls.
While the meat of the menu consists of a variety of cheesesteaks, such as the classic, the chicken and a teriyaki version, there are also hoagies, hamburgers, sandwiches and salads to choose from. All sorts of fries are available to dine on, from plain to loaded, not to mention sides such as onion rings and fried pickle chips.
Everything is cooked fresh upon ordering, which is quite a feat for the small restaurant. With the bulk of its consumers either ordering pick up or delivery, there still is a small amount of waiting time for those dining in.
The cheesesteaks came out steaming, and the fries were too hot to eat right away, a testament to the freshness. The plain fries still came with a hint of seasoning on top, making them easy to eat without any condiments.
While the original cheesesteaks are as good as cheesesteaks can get, it’s the variety of sandwiches that really makes them stand out. The pizza cheesesteak, for example, was a cheesesteak with pizza sauce on top that made for a fun mix of tastes. Maybe some more cheese would have been nice, but there were no complaints at the table.
To top off an already big meal, an array of desserts are available, like classic ice cream smoothies and floats. Simple, but very delicious, these treats are sure to stir feelings of childhood.
Once located on S.C. 544, this business decided to move a few more miles inland, closer to the heart of Conway. It has remained a stone’s throw away from the college, which surely many students were grateful for (especially because of the free delivery the restaurant offers).
However, since the move a number of months ago, Cheesesteak U has yet to update any of its social media forums or its website. Because of this, it is difficult to obtain reliable information about the restaurant from the Internet, so when in doubt, just call.
