4 States Bracing for Up to 2 Feet of Snow This Week: Map Shows Where

As June draws near, four states are now bracing for up to two feet of snow to hit later this week.

"Some snow is also likely across the highest elevations of the Cascades and the Sierra as well given a pocket of colder air aloft," the National Weather Service said in its latest forecast.

"Snow accumulations will generally be minor, though totals of 6 to 12 inches are possible in the Sierra above pass level. Cooler air along with the clouds and precipitation associated with this system will also help to knock temperatures down as much as 10 to 20 degrees below normal for portions of California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona through Thursday."

Up to 2 Feet of Snow Possible

The Cascades in Oregon and Washington are wrapping up the finishing touches on a winter storm that brought several inches of snowfall to the region earlier this week. Several cities are still expecting snowfall this week, though accumulations are expected to be minor.

The heaviest snowfall will touch down in the Sierra Mountain region later this week as both California and Nevada brace for up to two feet of snow.

An interactive map from the National Weather Service shows up to 24 inches of snowfall is possible in between the Cathedral Range and the Ritter Range in California. Meanwhile, in the Toiyabe Range in Nevada, up to 23 inches of accumulation is possible through Friday.

Much of the Sierra Mountain range is expected to see significant snowfall for late May, though the region is in desperate need of precipitation following an unseasonably warm and dry winter.

Heat Coming to The Plains

While parts of the Sierra Mountains in California and Nevada are bracing for more snowfall deep into May, unseasonably hot weather will persist across the northern Plains and Upper Midwest through mid to late week.

High temperatures are expected to soar well into the 80s and 90s on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with a few places across eastern Montana possibly nearing 100 degrees.

The National Weather Service warned that "this early season summerlike heat could become hazardous, especially for those who are sensitive to heat or have not acclimated to hotter temperatures yet this year."
