Jerry Seinfeld's 'Bee Movie,' a Cult Classic, Arrives on Netflix June 1

According to all known laws of aviation, there is no way a bee should be able to fly. Its wings are too small to get its fat little body off the ground. The bee, of course, flies anyway because bees don't care what humans think is impossible.

One of the most bizarre, most beloved, and most memed animated movies of all time is coming to Netflix on June 1: Jerry Seinfeld's 2007 Bee Movie.

Bee Movie was the '90s sitcom star's first major project since the end of Seinfeld ten years prior. "After the TV series, I didn't really want to do anything - and I still don't," Seinfeld said at the time, per Today. "I wanted to work in a medium I hadn't worked in before. I wanted to see if I could be funny in this way."

Bee Movie debuted at Cannes Film Festival with a star-studded cast featuring Renée Zellweger, Matthew Broderick, Chris Rock, John Goodman, and fellow Seinfeld alum Patrick Warburton. The film's story is strange: It follows one Barry B. Benson, who believes there's more to life than making honey. But when he finds out humans have been unfairly enjoying the fruit of his brethren's labor, he begins a legal crusade against them. It's like Reality Bites meets Kramer vs. Kramer.

'Bee Movie' Somehow Remains Relevant 20 Years Later

Despite being critically panned - Bee Movie has a 49 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes - it's always had quite the cult following. Much like the RickRoll, Bee Movie has also gotten the internet prank treatment. But instead of linking to Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up," it links to the Bee Movie script.

Back in 2016, the meme was so ubiquitous that Vanity Fairdeclared "Bee Movie Won 2016." Even 10 years later, Bee Movie still rules the internet. In April of this year, KQED did a podcast about the meme's apparent immortality.

"Annoyed with someone? Dump the Bee Movie script in their comments," journalist and host Morgan Sung said in a podcast on the meme's staying power. "Protesting against the government's anti-trans bathroom complaint forms? Spam the tip line with the Bee Movie script."
