Homeless Veteran Surrenders Dog for a Better Life, and the Story Is Heartbreaking
Stuck in an unimaginable situation, one homeless veteran in Texas decided to give his beloved pit bull Jake another chance at survival by opting for the most heartbreaking choice-giving him up.
The noble and difficult choice to surrender the dog to Fort Worth Fire Station 8 captured everyone's heart, including the firefighters who adopted the dog as one of their own. However, before recruiting Jake into their crew, the firefighter shared the tear-jerking letter Jake's former owner, a homeless veteran named Tom, left with his dog with local news station CBS 19 KYTX-TV.

One Heartbreaking Letter and Two New Beginnings
One weekend, firefighters came across a surprise – a sweet pit bull tied to their flagpole with a letter inside titled "Safe Place?" Inside, a 65-year-old veteran experiencing homelessness detailed the heartbreaking decision to surrender his dog, Jake, at the fire station, with the hopes they would help him have a better life.
Homeless for 20 months, the veteran detailed how he "had nothing but my baby," and "if you have a soul and really care about helping babies, please help my baby." A devastating and difficult decision to give up his companion for his dog's sake, this noble action was met with two new beginnings.

Adopted into the fire station, Jake has settled in beautifully, greeting camera crews with a friendly smile and plenty of cuddles. While fire stations will often adopt pets to keep them company, pit bulls aren't the typical breed you'd find in a fire station.
On the other hand, the fire station contacted Fort Worth's Homeless Outreach, HOPE, to locate Tom and give him a second chance. After locating the veteran and getting him medical checkups, the nonprofit Operation Texas Strong announced it would be gifting him an RV.
Privately funded and without an abundance of funds, the nonprofit has also managed to locate an RV park for Tom to place his RV and call home.
While it is heartbreaking that Tom was led to the decision to surrender his pup, both have the opportunity for a brand-new life, and that's well worth celebrating.
As Jake remains at the fire station as their new dog, and Tom begins to start his new life, it's a stark reminder of how pets, regardless of their humans' circumstances, can be more than just a friend, but also their babies and soulmates.
