Crocheting is a wonderful and relaxing hobby, but it’s no secret that the cost of all the supplies can add up! That’s why many crafters have turned to budget-friendly retailers like Dollar Tree to grab their essentials in the form of affordable kits. If you’re wondering about the quality of these dollar store crafts, you aren’t alone! A Reddit user decided to try some of Dollar Tree’s crochet kits and shared the “expectations versus reality” result with fellow shoppers. Find out more about their honest review below, then learn about other Dollar Tree craft kits that may be a better bargain.

What is included in the Crafter’s Square crochet animal kits?

Dollar Tree is a crafter’s paradise, as the store sells plenty of arts and craft supplies for every interest and skill level! One popular choice? The Crafter’s Square amigurumi crochet animal kits.

Amigurumi is the Japanese art of crocheting small, stuffed yarn critters and objects that are meant to be cute and whimsical. The dollar store’s kits certainly capture that adorable factor—you can find them in designs like frogs, cacti, whales, bees and more.

Naturally, the best part of the kits is the price: Each one costs just $1.25 and includes everything you need. Crafters get a plastic needle, yarn, stuffing, a crochet hook and plastic beads to bring the creation to life.

These kits are much more affordable than those at specialty craft stores, but are they worth buying? Find out below what shoppers had to say!

The honest Reddit review: frog kit vs. cactus kit

Earlier this week, a Dollar Tree shopper took to Reddit to share their experience with two of the store’s crochet kits featuring a cactus and a frog. Though the kits are sold under the same brand, the customer said the experience of using each one was wildly different.

The first kit they reviewed was for a cute smiling frog—but the resulting craft was hilariously unrecognizable. Another Reddit user even joked that it looked like a turtle on its back.

“The DIY Crochet Kit was 100% written by AI,” shared the original shopper. “The instructions were hard to even understand and most of them were unfinished.”

Luckily, the amigurumi crochet kit for a smiling cactus proved to be a better purchase. The crafter was quick to point out that the instructions were easier to read and formatted in a user-friendly way.

“The photos showed you how to do the steps and the diagrams gave you a refresher on the stitches,” they added.

So are either of these Dollar Tree crochet kits a must-have? It depends on your crocheting skill level!

“While I wouldn’t recommend either for absolute beginners, the [amigurumi] animal kit would be way easier to understand,” the shopper remarked.

A crocheting novice who tried the Dollar Tree kits seemed to agree with the original review.

“I bought the crochet animal kit and I’ve never done one before. Once I saw all the steps I said, ‘Nope, I’m going to donate it.’”

Another crafter took to the Dollar Tree website with a positive review, writing, “if you are a beginner adult crocheter this is a perfect small project that may take an hour or two to complete.”

Bottom line? These kits may be worth a shot if you’re an avid crocheter. Otherwise, you may find something else is a better fit for you!
