Billy Idol Honored With Lifetime Achievement Award at the AMAs

The 52nd American Music Awards, hosted by Queen Latifa, were held on Monday, May 25, in Las Vegas. Billy Idol was given the Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his contributions to music. The AMAs have given this award to only two other people thus far, Diana Ross and Rod Stewart.

Leon Thomas, who won Breakthrough R&B Artist that same night, presented the award to Idol. Drawing a personal connection, Thomas discussed his parents' involvement with the Black Rock Coalition and how they introduced him to the album Rebel Yell by Idol. The British punk rocker expressed gratitude for Thomas' words and later referred to the artist in his acceptance speech.

Idol began by thanking the AMAs and the fans for the honor. He continued saying, "When I started out in punk rock, back in 1976, we thought it may only last about 6 months, let alone 50 years. But we were doing it for the love and because music was the only thing that gave us a sort of feeling of freedom, a sense of freedom." Idol then directed his speech towards young musicians who felt the same way he did. "So to any kid out there who loves rock and roll or any music of any kind as much as Leon and I do, and if you're inspired to create that sense of freedom and pursue a life of art, all I can say is pick an instrument. Find out who you are and be it."

This recognition highlights Idol's long-standing influence on music. Idol found commercial success as a solo artist in the early 80s with singles like "Dancing With Myself." His self-titled album, Billy Idol, featuring "White Wedding (Pt. 1)" and "Hot in the City," introduced his solo career. He then followed up with Rebel Yell, which gained mainstream popularity, especially among punk rock fans. More than 40 years later, Idol, now 70, continues to release new music, with his most recent album, Dream Into It, debuting last year.

Continuing an impressive year, Idol will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He will join other icons such as Luther Vandross, Iron Maiden, Phil Collins, and Wu-Tang Clan, among others.

Beyond his musical accomplishments, Idol has openly discussed struggles in his personal life. In the 2025 documentaryBilly Idol Should Be Dead, he recounted his experiences with drug addiction, dealing with fame, and his eventual return to music.

Adding to the night's significance, Idol performed at the AMAs for the first time ever. The medley included widely known songs such as "Eyes Without a Face."
