Stray Cat Dutifully ‘Guards His Girlfriend' While She Sleeps in Their Box
Being a stray cat can't be easy. They have no protection, no stability, and often, no support. It can be a lonely business, but luckily, some of them definitely do find a family along the way.
For example, this cat and his girlfriend. They're making it work while being strays, and they usually share a little box to sleep in. However, she has no idea that he sweetly guards her while she sleeps so she can get some rest:
@awfcats He's an elderly stray cat who chose her long ago, and she's a feisty little soul who trusts no one but him. These days he's tired and weak, moving slower than before, yet every night he still sleeps in front of her box like a shield between her and the world. Even on the streets, love finds quiet ways to protect the ones it cannot leave behind. #straycat#cat#catlover#catperson#animals

AWF Cats cares for over 40 stray cats, including these two. Apparently, this wonderful boyfriend is one of the oldest strays in the colony, and he chose this sweet girl a few years ago. They've been basically inseparable ever since.
The two of them are as safe as two stray cats can be, since AWF is taking care of them. They're fed and receive all the medical care they may need, but they're feral: many of them aren't going to be suitable for homes as pets. Instead, AWF does the best they can.

They look after any stray cat they come across, regardless of age, gender, or medical complexity. They rely on donations from kind pet lovers to help cover those medical expenses, but there's nothing better than a happy, healthy, recovered cat:

I am so in love with this sweet boy. He was on the brink of death when they found him, but luckily, they were able to get him help in time. Now, he's living his best life!
How Do Stray Cats Find Shelter?
Stray cats are nothing if not incredibly resourceful. They know how to stay alive in even the worst conditions, because they learn very quickly what is and isn't safe, which often involves staying in larger numbers.
Cats typically like to find shelter in a place that's:
- Covered from the rain, and as hidden from view as possible.
- Up high, so they can see potential threats coming.
- Near a food source.
- Relatively warm.
Staying with a larger group helps stray cats feel a little safer, too, which is why most feral cats form "colonies" whenever they can. If you're trying to attract stray cats, leave out a warm cat box, some food, and make sure there's space for two!
