The Stick Shift BMW M3 Dies In 2027

The current generation of BMW M3 will end production next year. As a send-off, BMW introduced a special North America-only M3 CS Handschalter model: a manual-only CS model. The sixth-generation model will bow out at the end of next year before being replaced by the next-generation M3, which will offer both gasoline and electric powertrains.

Speaking to Bimmerlife, BMW Product Planning Specialist Scott Stirling said that 2027 will be the final model year for the M3, which is in its sixth generation. The planning specialist was also the one who convinced higher-ups in Munich to produce the manual-only CS model as the car's final farewell. However, it isn't clear when in 2027 M3 production will end. BMW will likely continue production as needed to fill orders for the M3, but rumors indicate that could come as soon as February.

The CS Handschalter is a fitting send-off for the generation. Originally, CS models were sold exclusively with an automatic transmission, but the Handschalter turns that on its head. It's also the lightest new M3 that money can buy, thanks to the 75 pounds of weight shed by the CS trim and its new manual transmission. The trick was accomplished by way of greater use of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) and a titanium exhaust muffler, forged wheels, and carbon fiber seats. Carbon-ceramic brakes account for another 31.5 pounds of weight loss.

As for the next M3, BMW will debut an electric M3 before a gasoline-powered model arrives down the line. We don't have an exact release date for the EV yet, but the model should leave its new Dingolfing production line in 2028. The electric model will pack four electric motors, simulated engine sounds, and lots of power. It will at least exceed the 463 horsepower found in the new i3 50 xDrive. Meanwhile, the gas-powered model will retain an inline-six engine, but will be offered exclusively with all-wheel drive and a manual transmission.
