Ferrari's First EV Comes With 1035 Horsepower And Distinctly Apple Looks

After much waiting, Ferrari's first EV is here. The Luce is the brand's only fully-electric model, powered by an electric motor at each corner. It's also the brand's most powerful SUV, outdoing the Purosangue by a good few hundred horsepower. As for the looks, everyone will have an opinion on them. Ferrari turned to design firm LoveFrom, led by former Apple designers Jony Ive and Marc Newson.

The Luce is just a touch larger than the Purosangue, coming in at 197.0 inches, or two inches longer than the brand's V12 SUV. However, it also sits about two inches lower. The body is all-aluminum and features a cool floating grille design, accented by gloss-black bodywork and a gloss-black roof. The doors, interestingly, open at the center, which will allow rear passengers more room to enter. The lighting arrangements are almost entirely hidden when not in use. The car's exceptionally clean nose can be attributed to the lack of wipers, which now sit upright against the windscreen. All of it says one thing: aerodynamics over everything.

Inside, the Luce feels a lot like one of Ive's phones. It's more about a blend of physical and digital controls, though, and the clean design is a real highlight of the new EV. The car seats five, making it exceptionally practical even if it didn't boast the largest trunk ever fitted to a Ferrari. The cabin displays are all OLED, but the space itself isn't dominated by screens. Displays throughout show key items like charge levels and efficiency, while physical controls remain for essential functions.

Ferrari's EV is powered by four synchronous, permanent-magnet electric motors that send a majority of their power to the rear two motors. The front pair makes a combined 282 horsepower, while the rear two produce 831 horsepower for a total of 1035 horsepower. The brand says the whole package weighs some 4,982 pounds and is good for 60 mph in just 2.5 seconds and a top speed of 193 miles per hour. Ferrari has a launch mode that can be activated by a large (and very cool) pull handle over the center console. As for the "shift" paddles, the left controls brake regeneration, while the right gradually demands more torque from the electric motors. Ferrari says the Luce's range will be around 330 miles. As for pricing, the Luce goes on sale in Europe first, priced at 550,000 EUR. Convert that to USD, and a Luce will run you a healthy $640,000 or so.
