Celebrating MLK Day 2023 in Myrtle Beach: Events, parades and church services

Numerous events celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day will be in Myrtle Beach throughout the week for a program called Freedom Week.

The Carolina African American Heritage Foundation is hosting the events, from Jan. 13-17, in partnership with the city and the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce.

The foundation “promotes cultural, arts and educational programs relative to the historical and culture of African Americans living in the Carolinas,” according to its website.

Freedom Week Events

Jan. 14 - 10 a.m. on Ocean Boulevard

  • MLK Drum Major Parade will run from 15th Avenue to 8th Avenue North on Ocean Boulevard.

Jan. 14 - 1 to 3 p.m. at the Myrtle Beach Train Depot

  • Mental Health Forum will feature several activists and professionals in the mental health field, including keynote speaker Johnny McCoy, who is the founder and CEO of WhiteFlag Inc., which offers a mental health app for people in need of peer support, according to its website.

Jan. 15 - 4 to 7 p.m. at Mount Olive AME Church on Carver Street

  • CommUNITY Ecumenical Service

Jan. 16 - 9 a.m.

  • Drum Major Awards and Breakfast will be held at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.

Jan. 17 - 9 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center

  • Economic Development Summit will feature keynote speaker Michael Allen, CEO and founder of MOA Architecture Inc. and include a panel on building a small business ecosystem
